Stirring Home

A home in Meguro in Tokyo by Mount Fuji Architects Studio stirs up the much feeling in me - designed for a movie producer couple, this concrete and engineered wood ( I won't ever think the Japanese would use synthetic wood but they look good here) lights up differently in the day and night, both on the interior and exterior. The double volume bookshelves are heavenly and so is the detailing of the staircase handrails.

Shop House

Tsubomi House in Tokyo by architect Yoshinori Sakano of Flathouse is owned by a young biscuit-baker and his family. A whimsical interpretation of a 'shop-house' - the living quarters and a biscuit shop on the ground floor are split into seven mezzanine levels integrated in a voluminous atrium space, something you can't really tell from the outside.





There's a lot going on here - the different textures of the staircases breaks up the monotony of the circulation, one weighted and one floating in the air, people and spaces always interacting visually and pockets of spaces here and there. It feels like a grown up version of a tree house.
