Book Space

Look at this lovely libray in Chile - the Licanten Public Library by Emilio Marin and Murua Valenzuela...a reconstruction of an old metal shop for trains abandoned 20 years ago. Libraries are a sore topic for me since the government went and tore down our beautiful red-brick public library at Stamford Road - I even wrote about it for my architecture dissertation. One of the most loved buildings it was replaced by...a short tunnel for cars. gah. and the public building was moved to a glass building with the common borrowing area in a dull overcrowded basement - nada...can't replace the lofty sunwashed atriums of the old library....anyway. I can't imagine how lovely this library space will be filled with books - it's just a small library but so enriching - our community libraries could do with such enriching spaces instead of being squashed in the top level of shopping malls. Too much ranting! I told you libraries are a sore point for me!
